Upcycle Identity Series Lounge Chair

The Upcycle Identity Series is a unique lounge chair that upcycles parts typically discarded during the furniture manufacturing process. The contours and scratches of leather are often perceived negatively as irregularities and are discarded in production. However, this irregularity is precisely what gives each material its individuality and inherent charm. By leveraging the exceptional craftsmanship of Iyobe Kogei, we actively incorporate these discarded parts, designing each piece of furniture to have its own distinctive character.

The lounge chair is spacious enough for one person to sit comfortably or for multiple people to gather. By slightly elevating it off the floor, the wild edge of each piece is highlighted, emphasizing its uniqueness. The upholstered sections are created with two types of stitching and subtly colored threads, giving the seat a rich expression. Combined with high-quality leather and brass-colored metal legs, the lounge chair exudes refined elegance and presence. Its striking form makes it a symbol in any space, suitable for both individual use and as part of a connected set, making it versatile for homes, commercial facilities, hotels, or office entrances.

During the development process, the challenge was how to finish the product as a stable item while retaining the unique contour lines of the leather, which we named the “Wild Edge.” By incorporating the “Wild Edge” into the sides of the furniture, we were able to achieve a design with a distinctive presence and a luxurious seating experience. Additionally, we adopted a polygonal seat shape and adjustable armrests to create furniture that can accommodate various uses. Through this development, I personally realized that what were once considered negative aspects of leather—wild edges, scratches, and wrinkles—are actually the material’s inherent individuality and charm. I hope that this product will help bring recognition to its value in society as well.
